life is fragile

Mar. 30th, 2009 | 04:17 pm

As I read the email from USC giving their deepest condolences to one of our very own Business freshman student, who passed away over the weekend due to a hit-and-run accident near school, I was in a state of shock. I started thinking, "how are her friends and family coping with the sudden loss?", "what if it was me? going to school, not knowing that it is the last day you will ever get to see the world, see your friends again. and how you will never get to see your family again. that you never get to tell your loved ones how much you love them." What if it was one of my friends? I don't know how I would react now. I'm still in a state of shock, am still very affected by the news even though I don't know that girl personally. My deepest condolences to her family. May you rest in peace.

Mar. 25th, 2009 | 11:30 am

Spring Break was awesome, but now that I'm back in school, I've been bombarded non-stop with homeworks, projects and exams. Today's only the third day of school and I've already taken two midterms haha. Sigh.. Cant wait for this semester to end. Anyway, I'm quite excited to start working after I graduate next year haha random thought :) And I'm halfway through my Miami post, so I will publish it soon! Much love, xoxo

a break, at last

Mar. 12th, 2009 | 12:10 am

Tomorrow's the last day of classes before I can get one week off school, yay!! Going to Miami for 4 days -- skydive, snorkel, and every beach-y activities that you can think of. But I have two midterms right after Spring Break... I dont even want to think about it right now. And, today M told me something which made me really pissed off, but whatever its not worth it. I dont give a damn. Life's great and I'm loving it. Wonderful family, friends, and you. What more can I ask for? Oh, for the pictures, Sam. hahahaha

half alive

Feb. 7th, 2009 | 05:52 am

its 6am over here right now and i know that i should be sleeping but i cant. no idea why. just feel like typing and writing and just blog a senseless entry haha. the thunderstorm in Southern California has been going on for two whole days (and you know it doesnt rain much over here) and its supposed to be raining for the next couple of days too. floods have been reported everywhere and this is a sure sign of global warming, sigh. even though i hate getting wet in the rain, i love driving when its raining cause i can play with the wiper :) i love to see the water being swept away, it just gives me this fuzzy feeling inside. weird, i know haha its just one of those habits. i suddenly miss my friends back in Singapore very very much and i wish that im back home with all of them. i miss spending time with all of you; where friendship is so sincere and so real. i think i might just go back in August for the 2 weeks of holidays between the end of Summer semester and the start of Fall. i dont know why we've been quarreling so much but im glad that we always make up in the end. i hope it never ends between us. okay this entry is really random and i dont know why i am jumping from one topic to another but like i said its gonna be a senseless entry haha if you read it till the end (which is here), then thank you for being so patient hehe much love.

dont you wish life has humps; so that we can slow down once in a while?

Jan. 16th, 2009 | 03:01 am

So one week of school has passed in a blink of an eye, and I have to say that I'm truly exhausted. Waking up at 6:30am every day and trying to beat the rush hour traffic in order to reach school in time for my 8:00am class is not exactly my idea of a good schedule. Sigh, I hope I can make it through the next 17 weeks of school. Homeworks are really coming in at a quick rate, and quizzes are coming up soon. Good luck to me.

And weather has been such a bitch. It's supposed to be winter now, but why is it so freaking scorching hot? How can it even reach 30C on a winter afternoon? It feels so much like summer, I dont even want to think about how crazy the weather would be five months from now. I would probably melt into a pool of fats when summer comes around.

On a side note, A took one of the picture off my wall in order to replace that empty space with our picture, he's such a cutiepie haha. Been spending the past five days with him (ever since he got back to LA) and I'm loving it.. Even though I don't know what we've been doing for the past five days haha. Time flies so quickly when I'm with you.

This post shall be continued in a friend-only entry hahaha love you guys xoxo

Back from New York

Jan. 11th, 2009 | 05:43 am

Even though New York was pretty awesome and I loved it very much, I'm so glad to be back in Los Angeles where I can finally get some Sun. Finally learned how to appreciate the lovely warm weather in Southern California after going through the negative-degrees-celcius days in New York.

School's starting tomorrow and I'm not really excited about it (even though a couple of weeks ago, I was kinda looking forward to it) Been shifting my schedule around, but it's still kinda bad. I mean, how can I have 8am classes everyday?! That means I have to wake up at 6.30am everyday and that just annoys the hell outta me.. But whatever, I'll just stick to it.

And I'm broke from New York because the food there is so expensive and so is the hotel and so is the cab fare. And also, I bought a pair of Chanel heels and another pair of Prada heels. Goodness, its time to save up some money so I can go to Hawaii in March, yay!

Seven Pounds

Jan. 3rd, 2009 | 04:10 pm

Watched "Seven Pounds" last night even though I was pretty exhausted and I am glad that I went. It is hands-down one of the slowest, yet the best movie I have ever watched. Throughout the whole movie, you will be pretty lost and be like wtf-where-is-this-movie-going, but when it comes to the ending and  you start to piece everything together, you'll be like omg-this-is-so-awesome!! It's an ultra tear-jerker so be prepared to bring a pack of tissue with you if you ever decide to catch this movie. "Seven Pounds" is definitely one of my fave movies of all times.

Our God is good.

Jan. 3rd, 2009 | 03:52 pm

'Let me explain the problem science has with Jesus Christ.' The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.

'You're a Christian, aren't you, son?'

'Yes sir,' the student says.

'So you believe in God?'

'Absolutely.'

'Is God good?'

'Sure! God's good.'

'Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?'

'Yes.'

'Are you good or evil?'

'The Bible says I'm evil.'

The professor grins knowingly.

'Aha! The Bible!' He considers for a moment.

'Here's one for you, l
et's say there's a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?'

'Yes sir, I would.'

'So you're good...!'

'I wouldn't say that.'

'But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't.'

The student does not answer, so the professor continues. 'He doesn't, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that one?'

The student remains silent.

'No, you can't, can you?' the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.

'Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?'

'Er...yes,' the student says.

'Is Satan good?'

The student doesn't hesitate on this one.

'No.'

'Then where does Satan come from?'

The student : 'From...God..'

'That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?'

'Yes, sir.'

'Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything, correct?'

'Yes.'

'So who created evil?' The professor continued, 'If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.'

Without allowing the student to answer, the professor continues: 'Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?'

The student: 'Yes.'

'So who created them?'

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question.

'Who created them?'

There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.

'Tell me,' he continues onto another student.

'Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?'

The student's voice is confident: 'Yes, professor, I do.'

The old man stops pacing.

'Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?'

'No sir. I've never seen Him.' '

Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?'

'No, sir, I have not.'

'Have you ever actually felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelled your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?'

'No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't.'

'Yet you still believe in him?'

'Yes.'

'According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?'

'Nothing,' the student replies. 'I only have my faith.'

'Yes, faith,' the professor repeats. 'And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith.'

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of his own. 'Professor, is there such a thing as heat?'

'Yes,' the professor replies. 'There's heat.'

'And is there such a thing as cold?'

'Yes, son, there's cold too.'

'No sir, there isn't.'

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet.

The student begins to explain. 'You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest-458 degrees. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.'

Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.

'What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?'

'Yes,' the professor replies without hesitation. 'What is night if it isn't darkness?'

'You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?'

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester. 'So what point are you making, young man?'

'Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.'

The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. 'Flawed? Can you explain how?'

'You are working on the premise of duality,' the student explains. 'You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.' 'Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?'

'If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do.

''Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?"

The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.

'Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?'

The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided. 'To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean.' The student looks around the room.

'Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?'

The class breaks out into laughter. 'Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt professor's brain, touched or smelled the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir. So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?'

Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable. Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. 'I guess you'll have to take them on faith.'

'Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life,' the student continues. 'Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?'

Now uncertain, the professor responds, 'Of course, there is. We see it everyday. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.'

To this the student replied, 'Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.'

The professor sat down.

Stocks, oil, gold tank on growing recession fears
Friday October 24, 10:28 am ET
By Patrick Rizzo and Ellen Simon, Associated Press Writers

Stock market rout spreads around the world as recession worries turn to dismay

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stock markets around the world plummeted Friday and oil prices plunged to their lowest in more than a year. Even gold, the traditional safe haven in times of panic, fell sharply.

The common denominator was growing fears that governments, central banks and finance ministers seem powerless to stop the deepening of a global recession that will slam corporate earnings and lead to deep job losses around the world.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped more than 430 points in morning trading. Before the open of New York trading, Dow futures had dropped 550 points, triggering a temporary trading halt in stock futures contracts in an effort to slow the decline. If the Dow drops 1,100 points before 2 p.m. the New York Stock Exchange would be forced to use "circuit breakers" that could lead to temporarily shutting the market, something it hasn't done since 1997.

"This is beyond volatile: It is chaotic," Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics wrote in note to clients. "This is the kind of day when the central banks step into the market with an 'unexpected' interest rate move to calm things down."

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is monitoring the markets and staying in close touch with market participants, a spokeswoman said.

Oil fell sharply and traded near $63 a barrel amid weakening global demand for crude -- despite a decision by the OPEC cartel to cut production quotas by 1.5 million barrels a day from next month.

The dollar plunged below 93 yen, a 13-year low. Gold fell as low as $681 an ounce, its lowest since January last year.

It was already a black Friday overseas. Japan's Nikkei stock average dropped 9.6 percent. Germany's benchmark DAX index plunged as much as 10.8 percent, France's CAC40 slid 10 percent and Britain's FTSE 100 shed 8.7 percent.

"We are getting used to wild swings in the markets, but today's moves verge on the bizarre," said Julian Jessop, chief international economist at Capital Economics.

The only good news was the 5.5 percent increase in September existing home sales. Median home prices, however, dropped to $191,600, down 9 percent from a year ago.

The U.K.'s third quarter gross domestic product fell 0.5 percent, with the steepest decrease in 18 years putting the country on the brink of recession. Shares of Japan's Sony sank more than 14 percent when it slashed its earnings forecast for the fiscal year. In Germany, Daimler's stock dropped 11.4 percent in morning trading; it reported lower third-quarter earnings and abandoned its 2008 profit and revenue guidance.

Emerging market economies and currencies are coming under extreme pressure. Investors are pulling money out of countries in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia on fears vulnerable countries will not only be hit hard by the financial crisis but may also default on debt.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 8.3 percent and markets in India, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines were also down sharply.

Brazilian stocks slumped for the fourth straight day, with the Ibovespa index down 3.9 percent in midday trading. Mexico's benchmark index was down 6 percent.

"Periods of panic punctuated by occasional calm appears to be the manner of things for now," said Daragh Maher, a strategist at Calyon Corporate and Investment Bank in London.

Investors around the world seemingly have become more convinced the global economy is on the brink of a long and painful recession, if it's not already in one.

Over the past few weeks, governments have taken unprecedented steps to thaw frozen credit markets and avert the downturn. But while there are signs that credit markets are beginning to thaw -- rates banks charge each other for short-term loans have been falling in recent days -- the outlook from companies reporting earnings are almost universally cautious about their prospects going forward.

That means companies will be reluctant to buy new equipment or hire new workers. U.S. unemployment claims, already well into recession territory, are rising even faster than expected. Economists warn the worst is yet to come.

On Thursday, the government said new applications for unemployment insurance rose 15,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 478,000, above analysts' estimates of 470,000. Jobless claims above 400,000 are considered a sign of recession.

Goldman Sachs, Chrysler and Xerox all announced they were cutting workers by the thousands, adding to the woes of an economy beset by tighter credit and wobbly banks.

PNC Financial Services said it is acquiring National City bank for $5.8 billion and will receive $7.7 billion in capital from the federal government as part of its $700 billion financial rescue plan.

The White House, in unusually stark language, acknowledged Thursday the economy is going through what spokeswoman Dana Perino called a "rough ride."

"We expect our GDP (gross domestic product) number next week not to be a good one and the next quarter to be tough as well," Perino said.

The Commerce Department will release its first estimate of third-quarter economic performance Oct. 30, and Wall Street analysts project it will show the economy contracted by 0.5 percent, according to Thomson/IFR.

Many economists expect the decline to continue into the current quarter and the first three months of 2009, if not longer. The classic definition of a recession is at least two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, testifying before a House committee, said he could not see "how we can avoid a significant rise in layoffs and unemployment."

The apparently universal gloomy outlook was feeding the selling.

The Standard & Poor's 500 was down 45.94, or 5 percent, to 867.62. Sam Stovall, S&P's chief investment strategist, put a 700 target on the index, saying S&P's equity analysts expect operating results for the 500 large companies to decline 10 percent in 2008.

Under New York Stock Exchange circuit breakers, if the Dow drops 2,200 before 1 p.m., trading will be halted for two hours. If the threshold is breached between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., the halt will last 30 minutes. Trading will continue to take place if stocks plummet 1,100 points after 2:30 p.m.

If the index falls 2,200 points before 1 p.m., the market will close for two hours. If the decline takes place between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., there will be a one-hour pause. The market will close for the day if stocks sink 2,200 points after 2 p.m.

In there's a 3,350-point decline, the market would close for the day, regardless of the time.

Associated Press writers Stevenson Jacobs in New York, Louis Watt and Carlo Piovano in London and Martin Crutsinger, Christopher S. Rugaber and Marcy Gordon in Washington contributed to this report.

Why why why oh why is the economy so scary right now? Sometimes I wonder if my dad's business is affected by the economy, which I probably think it is judging on how bad it is right now, but I never have the courage to ask him about it. And I don't know why.
